Healthcare and the environment
Anthropogenic environmental change is having a profound impact on human health. Paradoxically, the healthcare sector is both a responder to and a contributor to this crisis, generating up to 4.6% of total global greenhouse gas emissions annually. At CanHelp Through HealthCare, we’re taking steps to reduce our environmental footprint and lead by example in the industry,
Environmental impact
Plastic waste
Plastic waste is one of the most significant environmental challenges of our time. We’re committed to doing our part in reducing the 350 million metric tons of plastic waste produced globally each year.
Plasticosis
Plasticosis, a disease affecting birds due to ingestion of plastic waste, is a stark reminder of the impact of plastic pollution. These birds are the ‘canary in the coal mine’ for humanity, warning us of the broader environmental consequences.
Key initiatives
Protective gear: We have replaced single-use protective masks and respirators with reusable alternatives, significantly reducing waste. Our sterilization pouches and surgical wraps are also designed for multiple uses, minimizing the environmental footprint of medical procedures.”
Recycling plastic waste responsibly: We ensure that any waste polypropylene products are recycled responsibly. By bringing these materials back to Canada, we ensure they are processed at facilities specifically equipped to handle this type of plastic waste.
Education
We acknowledge our initiatives are a “drop in the bucket” with respect to overall plastic waste globally; however, educating those around us, and making people more mindful about their choices is something our small organization can do to help everyone — locally and abroad.

Every action matters
We all must do our best to mitigate the 350 million metric tons of plastic waste created every year. Small actions add up to big changes. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, an environmental advocate, or someone who cares about the future of our planet, there’s a role for you in achieving sustainable practices. Together, we can make a difference.
